While you are seeking out solutions for your teen who may be struggling, it can be overwhelming to read through different types of treatment options and understand what they really mean. You’re probably thinking what many parents in your shoes have thought – what exactly is a residential treatment center, and what does that mean for my child, and my family?
A residential treatment center is a campus, or center, where fully immersed therapy treatment can take place. In this environment, nearly all facets of a client’s life are under supervision of the center. The center provides clients with professional and supportive staff, the space to identify what contributes to dysfunctional thoughts and behaviors, and an atmosphere to practice their prevention plans.
An atmosphere like this is a radical decision made by parents because often because of a crucial need, when they have exhausted all other options. The need is often due to how a student no longer responds to their parent’s direction and guidance. There is generally a lot of strife and tension in the relationship between the child and his/her parents. The parent’s lack of control generally becomes more and more frequent as the child continues to challenge boundaries and avoid, or be unaffected by, the consequences.
In these types of situations, a residential treatment center can be beneficial not only for the child but also for the parent to identify what changes they need to make in order to better help raise their child and encourage healthy decisions and a positive future. A residential treatment center gives both child and parents the space to identify what contributes to the dysfunction, what can be done to better prevent conflict, and how to handle conflict when it does occur. Trained professional staff can help teach and process with the parents and their child on how they can handle situations in a healthier way. In turn the child can then practice these prevention plans with staff and other peers as conflict occurs in the treatment center.
